Owusu, Strong and Mighty.

My family name is Owusu.

It’s a fairly common Akan name borne by many and I’ve never really thought to ask my dad about the meaning of the name. To be honest, Owusu sounded like an amalgamation of Owuo (Death) and Nisuoย (Cry), which would form something morbid like Death Cry or Dirge. That wasn’t pleasing at all.ย

I knew that one day, my son would probably ask me what it meant so I had to do my homework. So after a lifetime of bearing this name, I finally decided to ask my dad and uncle in our little family WhatsApp group (yes, we have one!๐Ÿ˜‚). I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Owusu actually means Strong and Mighty. My uncle shared with me that the name is derived from Dua Wusu, which means Indestructible Tree. Pretty awesome, right?

I’ve always been indifferent to my surname but knowing this makes me want to live up to the name. We are strong willed and determined. Here’s to the Strong and Mighty Me!!

What does your surname mean? Have you thought to find out? What did you discover? Let me know in the comments section. Have an awesome day!
